Covetous Dragon card art
Covetous Dragon puts a 6/5 flying body on the board for four mana — legitimate stats — but it sacrifices itself the moment you control no other artifacts, which makes it a liability in any deck that isn't built around that constraint. Jon Irenicus, Shattered One turns the drawback into a weapon by gifting the Dragon to an opponent, offloading the self-sacrifice trigger entirely.

In Commander, Covetous Dragon is a niche include rather than a staple — its stats are strong for the cost, but the artifact-dependency makes it a blank threat in decks that can't reliably keep an artifact in play. Donate-focused commanders flip the calculus entirely, making it one of the better cheap burdens to push onto an opponent. In Legacy and Vintage, a 6/5 flier for four mana is not embarrassing on rate, but the conditional self-sacrifice is a real liability against artifact removal, and more reliable threats exist at that slot. Oathbreaker can find uses for it in the same donate shells that Commander enables.

Price Context

Current price

$4.24 cheap tier

At $4.24, Covetous Dragon sits at the low end of the mid-range tier — cheap enough to experiment with in a donate build without real financial commitment. Given its narrow application, that price is fair and unlikely to move unless a high-profile donate commander pushes demand.
