Cosmic Hunger card art
Cosmic Hunger deals damage equal to a target creature's power to another target creature or planeswalker — instant-speed, no attack required, and it scales with whatever you're already pointing at the board. The cost is that you need a creature with meaningful power in play, which makes it a role-player rather than a standalone answer; Legolas, Master Archer turns that condition into a repeatable engine.

Legolas, Master Archer

Legolas, Master Archer

61.4% of decks · synergy 0.58

Legolas, Master Archer already wants to ping creatures with his own ability, and Cosmic Hunger doubles down on that gameplan by letting his power become a removal spell — 61% of Legolas decks run it for exactly that redundancy.

03
Fynn, the Fangbearer

Fynn, the Fangbearer

22.9% of decks · synergy 0.20

Fynn, the Fangbearer cares about deathtouch creatures connecting, and Cosmic Hunger lets those same creatures kill blockers before combat even begins — clearing the path for poison counters.

04
Maarika, Brutal Gladiator

Maarika, Brutal Gladiator

18.9% of decks · synergy 0.18

Maarika, Brutal Gladiator is built to fight, and Cosmic Hunger gives the deck an additional non-combat fight effect that keeps opponents' threats off the board while Maarika pressures life totals.

Jenny FlintMadame Vastra

Jenny Flint // Madame Vastra

16.8% of decks · synergy 0.16

Jenny Flint // Madame Vastra rewards killing creatures your opponents control, and Cosmic Hunger is a clean way to generate those kills at instant speed — feeding the investigate engine without spending attack steps.

Cosmic Hunger is a Commander card at heart: the sorcery-to-instant upgrade matters most in a multiplayer game where holding up interaction is a full-time job. In Pioneer and Modern, one-sided fight effects compete against much leaner interaction, and the reliance on a creature already in play makes it too conditional for most constructed lists. Pauper is the one non-Commander format worth watching — green commons that generate big bodies can make Cosmic Hunger pull real weight, and the card pool there is shallow enough that instant-speed fights are meaningful. Everywhere else, treat it as Commander-specific glue.

$0.32 bulk tier

At $0.32, Cosmic Hunger is bulk — grab as many copies as you need without thinking about it. Bulk instant-speed interaction in green rarely spikes unless a specific commander becomes dominant, so there's no financial case to stock up beyond personal use.
