Coruscation Mage card art
Coruscation Mage turns every nonland permanent entering the battlefield into a Lightning Bolt to the face — for just two mana. In any deck that floods the board, that passive ping count snowballs fast enough to close games without ever attacking, and Kuja, Genome Sorcerer decks have made it a near-universal include for exactly that reason.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01

Kuja, Genome Sorcerer

84.5% of decks · synergy 0.76

Kuja, Genome Sorcerer creates a token on each opponent's end step, meaning Coruscation Mage fires every single round of the table without any extra investment — it's a damage engine that runs itself.

02
Alania, Divergent Storm

Alania, Divergent Storm

87.0% of decks · synergy 0.67

Alania, Divergent Storm copies instants and sorceries, which can cascade into a flood of token or permanent triggers that let Coruscation Mage rack up damage across multiple spells in a single turn.

03

Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might

63.7% of decks · synergy 0.58

Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might replaces any red source's damage that would be less than its power — so Coruscation Mage's one-damage pings each become four or more, turning a chip-damage enabler into a legitimate kill condition.

04
Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin

Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin

66.9% of decks · synergy 0.58

Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin triggers whenever an opponent loses exactly one life, and Coruscation Mage reliably delivers those single-point pings every time a permanent enters — the two form a self-feeding loop of draws and +1/+1 counters.

05
Black Waltz No. 3

Black Waltz No. 3

61.2% of decks · synergy 0.53

Black Waltz No. 3 rewards spell-slinging with copied instants and sorceries, and Coruscation Mage converts the resulting wave of entering permanents and tokens into direct damage that pressures opponents across the whole board.

Format Analysis

Coruscation Mage is legal across essentially every major format but finds its home in Commander, where the combination of multiple opponents and high permanent-volume strategies amplifies its passive damage to a degree 1v1 formats can't match. In Standard, Modern, and Pioneer, a two-mana 2/2 that pings once per permanent entering is too slow and too fragile to compete with dedicated burn or tempo plays. Legacy and Vintage have no use for it whatsoever — the card simply doesn't operate at those power levels. Commander is where it's built to live, specifically inside token generators and storm-adjacent shells that can trigger it dozens of times in a single turn.

Price Context

Current price

$0.97 bulk tier

At $0.97, Coruscation Mage sits at the top of the bulk range — cheap enough to slot into any deck on a whim, but the 84% inclusion rate in Kuja, Genome Sorcerer decks suggests demand could push it above the dollar threshold as the commander gains popularity. Buy it now if you need it; there's no reason to wait.
