Alania, Divergent Storm
Legendary Creature — Otter Wizard
Whenever you cast a spell, if it's the first instant spell, the first sorcery spell, or the first Otter spell other than Alania you've cast this turn, you may have target opponent draw a card. If you do, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.

Alania, Divergent Storm turns every instant and sorcery you cast into a free copy — the kind of snowball effect that ends games if it sits on the board for two or three turns. The cost is that it paints a massive target on your head the moment it resolves, and spells like Return the Favor that redirect that free copy back at you can punish you harder than any counterspell. Run it in decks that can protect it or close fast; Bria, Riptide Rogue shells do both.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Bria, Riptide Rogue
Bria, Riptide Rogue copies spells through the combat damage trigger, and Alania, Divergent Storm stacks directly on top of that engine — every spell Bria already wanted to copy now generates an additional Alania copy, creating layers of free spells that compound each attack step.

Cormela, Glamour Thief
Cormela, Glamour Thief cares about instants and sorceries going to the graveyard, and Alania, Divergent Storm feeds that pipeline by generating extra spell copies that still resolve and hit the yard — giving Cormela additional triggers without spending extra cards.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Alania, Divergent Storm is legal in every major constructed format, but Commander is where it actually matters. In Commander, the multiplayer table and longer game give you time to build up spell chains, and the political pressure of a free-copy trigger on every instant and sorcery is genuinely warping. In competitive constructed formats like Modern and Pioneer, a four-mana 3/3 that requires you to cast spells to generate value is too slow and too killable to see serious play. Legacy and Vintage have access to enough fast mana and protection that Alania could theoretically do something degenerate, but those formats have better engines and no reason to reach for it.
