Confiscation Coup steals any artifact or creature on the board outright — no returning it at end of turn, no hoops, just a permanent transfer of ownership. Five mana with two blue pips is a real ask, but Satya, Aetherflux Genius and other energy-generating blue shells offset that cost while doubling down on the stolen permanent.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Satya, Aetherflux Genius
Satya, Aetherflux Genius generates energy every time she creates a token copy of a nontoken creature, which means Confiscation Coup's energy cost frequently runs on house money — steal their best creature, then fuel Satya's engine off the token she creates from it.

Saheeli, Radiant Creator
Saheeli, Radiant Creator cares about artifacts and artifact creatures specifically, and Confiscation Coup hands her a stolen one to copy or blink — the combination turns an opponent's Commander-staple artifact into a permanent piece of Saheeli's own game plan.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| oathbreaker | legal |
Confiscation Coup sees essentially zero play in competitive formats — five mana at sorcery speed is disqualifying in Legacy, Vintage, and even Pioneer, where the game is often decided before you untap with five lands. Commander is where it lives, and it earns its slot there specifically in energy-matters builds where the coup's secondary cost is a resource you're already generating. Outside of those synergy decks, five mana to steal one permanent is a reasonable rate in EDH's slower, multiplayer context, but blue artifact-and-creature theft has enough competition that Confiscation Coup needs an energy engine behind it to justify the slot.

Pricing data isn't currently available for Confiscation Coup, so check Scryfall or your preferred vendor for the current market price. Given its narrow energy-matters niche, it has historically been an easy pickup — demand is concentrated in a specific subset of blue Commander decks rather than spread across formats.
