Coffin Purge exiles one card from any graveyard for one black mana — instant speed, no frills, no upside. It does exactly one thing, and in a format where graveyard hate needs to hit multiple targets to matter, that's not enough.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Coffin Purge is outclassed by nearly every graveyard hate option available — Scavenging Ooze, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Relic of Progenitus all answer more than one card for comparable or lower investment. Pauper is where Coffin Purge is most defensible, since the card pool narrows and single-target exile can be enough to disrupt dredge or reanimator on the critical turn. In Legacy and Vintage, the rate is simply too inefficient; Surgical Extraction does the same job better for the same cost and strips every copy at once. Oathbreaker follows the Commander logic — skip it.

Price Context
Current price
$1.42 cheap tier
At $1.42, Coffin Purge sits in an awkward spot where it costs more than most of the cards that do the job better. There's no price-based argument for running it — budget graveyard hate at this tier is crowded with strictly stronger options.
