Scavenging Ooze card art
Scavenging Ooze is one of the most efficient pieces of graveyard hate in green — it eats cards from any graveyard, gains life, and grows itself, all at instant speed for a single mana per activation. The cost is that it needs a stocked graveyard to matter, but in Commander that condition is almost always met by turn three.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Aeve, Progenitor Ooze

Aeve, Progenitor Ooze

57.7% of decks · synergy 0.50

Aeve, Progenitor Ooze wants every Ooze it can get, and Scavenging Ooze is one of the best in the tribe — it enters as a 2/2 that scales independently of storm count, giving the deck a resilient threat that keeps growing after the big storm turn resolves.

02
Dina, Soul Steeper

Dina, Soul Steeper

43.2% of decks · synergy 0.40

Every life gained triggers Dina, Soul Steeper's drain ability, so Scavenging Ooze's repeated lifegain activations turn incidental graveyard hate into incremental damage dealt to every opponent at the table.

03
Trelasarra, Moon Dancer

Trelasarra, Moon Dancer

40.0% of decks · synergy 0.35

Trelasarra, Moon Dancer puts a counter on itself and lets you scry whenever you gain life, so each Scavenging Ooze activation that gains a life is also filtering your draws and building toward a lethal swing.

04
Yisan, the Wanderer Bard

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard

39.2% of decks · synergy 0.31

Scavenging Ooze sits at verse counter two for Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, giving the deck an early tutor target that also handles problematic graveyard decks before they get going.

05
Duskana, the Rage Mother

Duskana, the Rage Mother

30.7% of decks · synergy 0.29

Duskana, the Rage Mother pumps every 2/2 creature you control, and Scavenging Ooze enters as a 2/2 — so even before it eats a single card it qualifies for the anthem and comes in swinging for four.

In Commander, Scavenging Ooze is a staple — graveyard synergies are everywhere, and a two-drop that answers them while growing into a legitimate threat is exactly the kind of card that justifies a slot in any green deck. In Modern and Legacy, it has seen serious sideboard and mainboard play as one of the premier pieces of green graveyard hate, competing with Nihil Spellbomb and Rest in Peace in a slot that can also win the game on its own. Pioneer's graveyard decks are less oppressive but the Ooze still shows up in midrange sideboards where a threat that doubles as disruption outperforms pure hate. Standard legality makes it accessible to newer players, though its power is most apparent the more graveyard activity there is across the table.

Price Context

Current price

$0.46 bulk tier

At $0.46, Scavenging Ooze is bulk despite being a genuine staple — wide reprinting has driven the price down far below its play rate. It's safe to pick up copies without any concern about overpaying; this is a card that earns its slot and costs almost nothing to acquire.
