Clay Champion enters as a 3/3 or larger in a single color and a genuine threat in two, distributing +1/+1 counters across your board the moment it lands. The cost is real — triple-pip mana costs in two colors demand a deck built to support them — but Crystalline Crawler shows the ceiling when that constraint is met.

Clay Champion is a Commander card through and through — the format's longer games and multicolor staples give you the mana infrastructure to actually cast it off two pips per color without contorting your curve. In Modern and Legacy it's too slow and too dependent on a board state that competitive decks don't allow to develop. Pioneer is technically legal but the same problem applies: a five-mana creature that does nothing the turn it dies to a removal spell isn't where those formats want to be. In Commander, especially in Abzan, Esper, or any shell that cares about +1/+1 counters, Clay Champion arrives as a legitimate payoff.
