Chronicle of Victory card art
Chronicle of Victory turns every combat into a loot engine, letting you cash in excess tokens or expendable attackers for fresh cards each time you swing. At its price point it's a staple-tier inclusion in any token-wide or go-wide strategy, and Rat King, Verminister decks in particular run it at over a third inclusion rate for good reason.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Rat King, Verminister

Rat King, Verminister

36.7% of decks · synergy 0.34

Rat King, Verminister generates a constant flood of Rat tokens, and Chronicle of Victory converts every mass attack into a draw engine — the more creatures you send in, the more cards you see, which means more fodder for the next wave.

02

Grub, Storied Matriarch

30.1% of decks · synergy 0.28

Grub, Storied Matriarch incentivizes attacking with a wide board, and Chronicle of Victory rewards exactly that by drawing cards proportional to how many creatures you commit — the two effects compound each other naturally every combat.

03
High Perfect Morcant

High Perfect Morcant

32.3% of decks · synergy 0.27

High Perfect Morcant cares about creatures dying in combat, and Chronicle of Victory slots in as the card-draw engine that keeps your hand full after those trades, making sure each sacrifice to the board advances your resource base.

04

Dion, Bahamut's Dominant

30.2% of decks · synergy 0.26

Dion, Bahamut's Dominant leans on attacking with multiple creatures, and Chronicle of Victory provides the draw density those aggressive lines need to sustain themselves past the early turns.

05

Brigid, Clachan's Heart

28.3% of decks · synergy 0.23

Brigid, Clachan's Heart rewards a wide, aggressive attack pattern, and Chronicle of Victory acts as the refuel mechanism that prevents the deck from running out of gas when opponents start stabilizing the board.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Chronicle of Victory is legal across every major Constructed format but lives almost exclusively in Commander, where the go-wide token strategies that love it are most common and the slower, multi-turn payoff is actually realistic. In competitive 60-card formats — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy — the effect is simply too slow; combat-centric aggro decks want to close the game before Chronicle of Victory generates meaningful card advantage, and dedicated draw spells outperform it at lower costs. Standard is technically viable but the same ceiling applies: unless a token-flood shell emerges that specifically needs this kind of draw trigger, it won't see serious competitive play. Commander is where it earns its slot, particularly in decks that already want to attack wide every turn.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

If Chronicle of Victory is out of budget, Reconnaissance Mission and Bident of Thassa cover similar ground — both trigger on creatures dealing combat damage and cost a fraction of the price, though they require damage to connect rather than just attacking. Coastal Piracy is the flat-rate version at under a dollar and hits the same trigger condition, making it the cleanest swap for pure budget builds.

Price Context

Current price

$23.17 premium tier

At $23.17, Chronicle of Victory sits firmly in the premium tier for a draw enchantment, which is a real ask compared to functionally similar combat-draw effects available for under $2. It holds value best in formats and decks where its specific trigger — attacking, not dealing damage — matters enough to distinguish it from cheaper alternatives, but budget builders should look elsewhere first.
