Chromatic Armor card art
Chromatic Armor enters with a fate counter for each color in your mana costs paid, then removes one of those counters to redirect any damage you'd take — effectively a stackable damage shield that scales with how much colored mana you spent casting it. The payoff is real, but the setup cost is steep: you need a multicolored-heavy deck and consistent follow-up spending to keep the counters loaded.

Chromatic Armor is a Commander card through and through — the 100-card singleton format's longer games and multicolor commanders give it the runway it needs to accumulate and spend fate counters meaningfully. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but sees no play; three mana for a conditional damage shield is nowhere near the power level those formats demand. Commander is the only home where Chromatic Armor finds a willing audience, specifically in five-color or heavily multicolor builds where every spell refuels the counter pool.

Price Context

Current price

$0.83 bulk tier

At $0.83, Chromatic Armor sits firmly in bulk territory — cheap enough to throw into any multicolor brew without a second thought. It's a niche card with a small audience, so don't expect the price to move in either direction.
