Chitinous Cloak slaps a +1/+1 counter on the equipped creature and grants menace for three mana to cast and two to equip — five mana total on the first drop, which is steep for a stat bump and an evasion keyword you could get cheaper elsewhere. It's playable in counter-synergy builds that want the pip on entry, but it rarely makes the cut over more efficient equipment.

Chitinous Cloak is a Commander card almost exclusively — the counter-on-entry trigger lines up with proliferate engines, Hardened Scales effects, and token commanders that want incremental stat growth across a wide board. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern or Pioneer, equipment this slow doesn't survive the efficiency bar: two-mana equip costs and a single +1/+1 counter don't move the needle when Colossus Hammer and Shadowspear exist. Legacy and Vintage have even less patience for it. In Commander, the ceiling is niche but real — any deck that cares about counters entering the battlefield gets genuine value from the equip trigger, and menace on a voltron or go-wide threat is at least functional.

Price Context
Current price
$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Chitinous Cloak is deep bulk — you're paying less than a pack of gum for a card that will likely stay in this tier permanently given its narrow application and lack of reprint demand. Grab a copy if it fits a specific counter-synergy build, but don't expect the price to move in either direction.
