Chief of the Foundry pumps every artifact creature you control the moment it lands — no hoops, no conditions, just a static +1/+1 to the whole team. At three mana, it slots cleanly into any artifact-creature shell, and commanders like Sai, Master Thopterist and Karn, Silver Golem treat it as a baseline include rather than a consideration.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Sai, Master Thopterist
Sai, Master Thopterist converts every artifact cast into a 1/1 Thopter token, and Chief of the Foundry turns that stream of 1/1s into a legitimate aerial threat — the anthem effect scales directly with how fast Sai floods the board.

Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut
Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut makes all your artifact creatures into Juggernauts, and Chief of the Foundry stacks on top of that base stat line, pushing an already oversized board even further out of bolt range.

Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci generates Flying Machine tokens whenever you tap down, and Chief of the Foundry gives every one of them a free size bump — the more tokens da Vinci produces, the more return Chief squeezes out.

Urza, Chief Artificer
Urza, Chief Artificer gives all your artifact creatures menace, so Chief of the Foundry's anthem converts what would have been chump-blocked threats into difficult-to-stop combat math.

Traxos, Scourge of Kroog
Traxos, Scourge of Kroog is already a massive beater that untaps off historic spells, and Chief of the Foundry joining the board as an artifact creature both untaps Traxos and adds a +1/+1 to any other artifact creatures swinging alongside it.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Chief of the Foundry earns its keep — artifact-creature tribal is a real archetype at the format's scale, and a three-mana global anthem that is itself an artifact creature compounds well with token generators and aristocrats lines. In Modern and Pioneer, it competes against cheaper and more explosive payoffs in artifact shells, so it rarely makes the cut outside of budget builds or dedicated Constructs strategies. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more efficient anthem effects, pushing Chief of the Foundry out of those formats entirely on power grounds. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's logic closely enough that the same artifact-heavy shells where Chief thrives in one format will want it in the other.
