Captain's Hook card art
Captain's Hook hands any creature +2/+0, menace, and the Pirate type for three mana to cast and one to equip — that last line is the point, since it turns every creature in your deck into fodder for Pirate synergies the moment the Hook lands. In Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator pairings, converting non-Pirates into Pirates mid-combat is the entire reason to run it.

Captain's Hook solves Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator's core problem: creatures that don't trigger his Pirate clause become Treasuries waiting to happen the instant you equip for one mana, and the menace grant means those newly-minted Pirates are harder to chump on the way through.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

Captain's Hook is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive constructed formats have no interest in a three-mana Equipment that doesn't generate immediate card or mana advantage. Commander is where it actually lives — specifically tribal Pirate builds where the type-granting clause does real work rather than sitting as a footnote. Outside of Pirate synergy shells, it's a mediocre Equipment that loses to Swiftfoot Boots, Hammer of Nazahn, and a dozen other options on raw stats alone. Run it because you need more Pirates, not because you need a pump effect.
