Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a nonland card. Put the revealed cards on the bottom of your library in a random order. When you reveal a nonland card this way, Calibrated Blast deals damage equal to that card's mana value to any target.

Calibrated Blast deals damage equal to the mana value of the top card of your library — which, in a high-curve Commander deck, routinely hits for 6 to 10 before you've cast a single creature. The cost is variance: you don't choose what's on top, so without library manipulation it's unreliable enough to cut from anything but a dedicated high-CMC shell.

Commander is where Calibrated Blast is actually playable — 40 life means opponents can absorb small hits, but decks built around massive spells (Atraxa superfriends, Ramos cascade, or any Eldrazi-heavy build) can make this a repeatable 8-to-12-damage spell for three mana. In Legacy and Vintage it's too inconsistent to compete: those formats demand answers that do the same thing every time, and a damage spell that scales with deck construction rather than the board state doesn't make the cut. Modern is theoretically possible in a Through the Breach or Goryo's Vengeance shell where the top of the library is often a 10+ CMC threat, but the lack of a reliable setup engine keeps it fringe. Calibrated Blast is a Commander card — full stop.
