Broken Concentration counters a spell and, if you discard a card, makes that spell's controller discard one too — counterspell plus mind-rot stapled together for three mana. In decks that want the graveyard stocked or punish hand parity, it pulls double duty; everywhere else, it's just a slow Counterspell.

In Commander, Broken Concentration earns a slot only in decks that actively want cards in the graveyard or run a discard-matters theme — the conditional discard clause is dead text if you're just trying to answer a threat. In Modern and Legacy, three-mana counterspells compete against a field where Counterspell, Force of Negation, and Mana Drain exist, so Broken Concentration doesn't make the cut. Pioneer is the only constructed format where the modal upside might flicker into consideration, but the three-mana ask is still punishing on the draw. Treat it as a Commander-only roleplayer, not a cross-format staple.
