Brass Squire card art
Brass Squire lets you move Equipment between creatures at instant speed for free — no equip cost, just tap — which turns any Equipment-heavy board into a combat trick engine. The catch is a 3-mana 1/3 body that does nothing until you already have Equipment in play, so it earns its slot in dedicated shells like Tetsuo, Imperial Champion and falls flat outside them.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Tetsuo, Imperial Champion

Tetsuo, Imperial Champion

68.1% of decks · synergy 0.67

Tetsuo, Imperial Champion needs his Aura and Equipment conditions met at the right moment, and Brass Squire lets you snap Equipment onto him in response to removal or at the start of combat without paying equip costs — keeping his trigger live on demand.

02
Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms

Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms

50.3% of decks · synergy 0.46

Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms rewards stacking Equipment on one attacker, and Brass Squire lets you consolidate gear at instant speed mid-combat, turning a blocked creature into a sudden threat by redistributing Equipment after blockers are declared.

03
Wyleth, Soul of Steel

Wyleth, Soul of Steel

44.6% of decks · synergy 0.42

Wyleth, Soul of Steel draws cards for each Equipment and Aura attached to him when he attacks, so Brass Squire's ability to pile Equipment onto Wyleth at the start of combat without paying equip costs translates directly into extra cards.

04
Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos

Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos

45.9% of decks · synergy 0.41

Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos scales off having equipped creatures, and Brass Squire provides the free reattachment that keeps Equipment distributed efficiently as the board shifts — especially after blockers are declared.

05

Slicer, Hired Muscle

41.1% of decks · synergy 0.37

Slicer, Hired Muscle gets passed to opponents and used against you, so Brass Squire lets you strip Equipment off Slicer before an opponent's combat step and move it to one of your own creatures at instant speed, protecting your investment.

Format Analysis

Brass Squire is a Commander card through and through — the free instant-speed equip ability is powerful enough in a 100-card singleton format where you're building around a creature all game, and irrelevant everywhere else. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but competes with Stonehewer Giant and Stoneforge Mystic, both of which do more for the same or less investment; Brass Squire never sees play there. Commander is where its niche is real: Equipment commanders need redundancy for equip-cost reduction, and Brass Squire fills that role at a low curve position while offering combat-trick flexibility that the format's slower pace can actually exploit.

Price Context

Current price

$2.74 cheap tier

At $2.74, Brass Squire sits in the cheap tier and is a straightforward include for any Equipment commander without budget friction. It's a niche enough card that the price is unlikely to spike outside a reprint or a breakout Equipment commander driving demand.
