Bone Shards trades a creature or discards a card to unconditionally destroy any creature or planeswalker for a single black mana — that's Swords to Plowshares efficiency at common with a built-in discard outlet. In any deck that wants cards in the graveyard, like Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer, the cost isn't a cost at all.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer
Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer triggers off every noncreature card discarded, so Bone Shards turns removal into a free card from the top of your library — you're paying one mana to kill a threat and draw a card simultaneously.

Greasefang, Okiba Boss
Greasefang, Okiba Boss needs Vehicles in the graveyard to reanimate them, and Bone Shards is one of the cleanest ways to pitch an artifact while clearing a blocker the turn before Greasefang swings.

Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar
Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar's activated abilities reward discarding cards repeatedly, and Bone Shards slots in as removal that doubles as a discard trigger without needing a dedicated discard engine to justify it.

Xu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist
Xu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist cares about bones — creatures dying and cards hitting the graveyard — so Bone Shards feeds both halves of that engine while handling a threat on the board.

Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker
Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker loops creatures with power one or less, and Bone Shards lets you sacrifice one of those creatures on demand to remove an opposing threat, then watch Shirei return it at end of turn.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Bone Shards is most at home in Commander, where graveyard-matters decks are everywhere and one-mana unconditional removal is always at a premium. In Pauper it's a genuine role-player — common-legal removal that hits any creature is hard to come by, and the discard cost is often negligible in madness or threshold shells. Legacy and Vintage have access to Fatal Push, Swords to Plowshares, and Force of Will, so Bone Shards rarely makes the cut there outside fringe graveyard strategies. It's not legal in Pioneer or Standard, but that barely matters — the card was designed for formats where filling the graveyard is a feature, not a bug.
