Bereavement forces each opponent to sacrifice a creature whenever a Swamp enters the battlefield under your control — a repeating, no-mana-activation tax that compounds fast in black-heavy shells. Two mana to resolve, zero to maintain, and in the right deck it drains tables faster than most dedicated removal suites.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Bereavement is worth discussing seriously — multiplayer magnifies every trigger, and black decks flooding with Swamps can fire it three or four times a turn cycle without any additional investment. In dedicated Swamp-matters builds or mono-black landfall strategies, it applies meaningful pressure well before opponents can stabilize. Legacy and Vintage are both legal, but Bereavement is far too slow for those formats' threat density. Oathbreaker is legal as well, though the compressed game length dulls its incremental value.

Price Context
Current price
$0.27 bulk tier
At $0.27, Bereavement is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not demand. That price is stable simply because casual interest in niche enchantments doesn't move needles, so don't expect meaningful fluctuation in either direction.
