Battle of Frost and Fire card art
Battle of Frost and Fire deals 4 damage to each non-Giant, non-Wizard creature and each planeswalker, then draws you a card when it resolves — a board wipe and a cantrip stapled together for five mana. Outside of Aegar, the Freezing Flame decks where it triggers excess-damage draw on everything it touches, it's a niche enchantment saga that competes poorly with unconditional wipes.

01
Aegar, the Freezing Flame

Aegar, the Freezing Flame

59.8% of decks · synergy 0.59

Aegar, the Freezing Flame turns Battle of Frost and Fire into a draw engine — every creature the saga kills that had 4 or less toughness triggers Aegar's excess-damage clause, so a board full of X/3s and X/4s can net you a fistful of cards off a single resolution.

02
Ruhan of the Fomori

Ruhan of the Fomori

16.9% of decks · synergy 0.17

Ruhan of the Fomori runs Battle of Frost and Fire as a one-sided sweeper in disguise: Ruhan is a 7/7, safely above the 4-damage threshold, so the saga clears blockers without touching the commander.

In Commander, Battle of Frost and Fire earns its slot almost exclusively in Aegar, the Freezing Flame builds, where the excess-damage trigger converts it from a conditional wipe into a multi-card draw spell. In non-Giant, non-Wizard Commander decks it's outclassed by unconditional sweepers at the same or lower mana cost. In Modern and Pioneer it has seen essentially no competitive play — five mana for a conditional wipe that only kills 4-toughness-or-less creatures is too slow and too narrow against the creatures those formats field. Legacy and Vintage have access to far cheaper answers and have no reason to sleeve this.

Price Context

Current price

$0.19 bulk tier

At $0.19, Battle of Frost and Fire is bulk by any measure — pick up as many as you need without hesitation. Bulk enchantment sagas with narrow application rarely climb in price, so treat it as a permanent $0.25-or-less pickup.
