Baloth Pup is a 3/1 with trample for one mana — that's a real rate — but the drawback of losing trample whenever you gain life makes it unreliable in most green decks, which routinely gain life as a side effect of ramp, lifegain payoffs, or incidental triggers. A 3/1 vanilla for one green is fine; a 3/1 that randomly stops trampling is not worth the mental overhead.

Baloth Pup doesn't see meaningful play in any competitive format. In Modern and Legacy, one-mana creatures need to either generate immediate value or apply unconditional pressure — a conditional 3/1 with trample doesn't clear that bar when Experiment One and Pelt Collector exist. Pioneer has the same problem and better options. In Commander, Baloth Pup competes for a slot in green aggro or stompy builds, but those decks have no shortage of efficient beaters that don't punish you for playing your own game plan.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Baloth Pup is deep bulk — you're not buying it for value, you're picking it out of a common box. Bulk one-drop creatures don't appreciate unless they find a competitive home, and nothing in Baloth Pup's design suggests that's coming.
