Auriok Steelshaper card art
Auriok Steelshaper cuts equip costs in half and reduces the casting cost of every Equipment you play — on a two-mana body that pays for itself the turn it hits. The catch is a 1/1 stat line that folds to a stiff breeze, but in dedicated Equipment shells, especially Koll, the Forgemaster, the upside is too consistent to ignore.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Auriok Steelshaper earns its keep — Equipment-focused generals like Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale or Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith want every cost reduction they can find, and Auriok Steelshaper stacks with other discount effects to make high-equip-cost weapons effectively free. In Legacy and Vintage it sees essentially no play; the formats move too fast for a vanilla 1/1 that needs a board of Equipment to justify its slot. Modern has similarly left it behind as Equipment synergies there trend toward aggro shells that outpace what Auriok Steelshaper offers on rate alone.
