Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver card art
Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver mills three every turn and lets you cast exiled creatures for free — that's a repeatable threat engine on a three-mana planeswalker. The catch is a minus-X that nukes all exiled cards to clear opponents' graveyards, which means Ashiok pulls double duty in mill and hate strategies, and Umbris, Fear Manifest decks treat it as a core piece.

In Commander, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver slots cleanly into mill, exile-matters, and Dimir control builds — three opponents means thirty cards exiled before the first cycle is done, and the free-cast ability can steal a game-ending threat off any library. In Pioneer and Modern, Ashiok competes in a crowded planeswalker field and sees fringe sideboard use as graveyard hate that also pressures opponents, though three mana is a real cost in faster formats. Legacy and Vintage give it legal status but almost no practical home — the effect is too slow and narrow for those environments. Oathbreaker is the other Commander-adjacent format where Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver can be either commander or signature spell, and mill-as-win-condition is more viable in the smaller 20-life format.
