Ash Zealot card art
Ash Zealot is a 2/2 first strike, haste creature for two mana that punishes opponents for casting spells from graveyards — every flashback, unearth, or reanimation spell they resolve deals 3 damage to them. In graveyard-heavy metas that's a real tax, and commanders like Gornog, the Red Reaper turn every point of that incidental damage into a trigger; the cost is that Ash Zealot is purely reactive — against graveyard-light tables it's a vanilla 2/2 that trades down.

Gornog, the Red Reaper scales on damage dealt to opponents, so every graveyard punishment trigger from Ash Zealot feeds the engine directly — in a Gornog deck, that 3-damage ping isn't incidental, it's a resource.

In Commander, Ash Zealot occupies a narrow niche: graveyard-hate on a body that also synergizes with damage-matters commanders like Gornog, the Red Reaper, but at four players there are almost always better dedicated hate pieces like Rest in Peace or Grafdigger's Cage that don't require opponents to actually cast from the yard. In Modern and Pioneer, Ash Zealot has never cracked mainstream play — it's too conditional at two mana when aggressive red decks want unconditional pressure, and graveyard hate slots go to more reliable options. Legacy is the same story: the effect is real, but the competition for two-drop slots is severe. It's legal in Oathbreaker and Vintage, but no meaningful metagame there calls for it specifically.
