Annex Sentry card art
Annex Sentry enters, exiles any nonland permanent until it leaves — that's a Banishing Light stapled to a 2/3 lifelink body for three mana. The cost is that the permanent comes back when Annex Sentry dies, which means it belongs in decks that can flicker it repeatedly or sacrifice it on command, not as a straight removal spell. Elesh Norn effects that double the trigger on entry make the exile that much harder to undo.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01

Elesh Norn

48.1% of decks · synergy 0.46

Elesh Norn's proliferate engine keeps Annex Sentry tapped down permanently: the exile trigger fires, and the oil counters needed to phase it out stack fast enough that the enchanted permanent rarely returns.

02
Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa

Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa

18.9% of decks · synergy 0.18

Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa proliferates every combat, which accelerates the oil-counter clock on Annex Sentry and turns a temporary exile into a near-permanent lock while Ixhel swings overhead.

03
Vishgraz, the Doomhive

Vishgraz, the Doomhive

14.7% of decks · synergy 0.14

Vishgraz, the Doomhive floods the board with toxic Mites, and Annex Sentry's lifelink body contributes to the life-total swing that makes the poison clock lethal faster.

Annex Sentry is a Commander card through and through — the oil-counter mechanic is incremental enough that it needs a proliferate shell or repeated flicker to pull ahead, and 100-card singleton gives it the supporting cast it wants. In Modern and Pioneer it's outclassed by cheaper, unconditional removal that doesn't hand the permanent back when it dies. Legacy and Vintage move too fast for a three-mana 2/3 with a conditional payoff. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where a phyrexian-tribal or proliferate signature spell might make Annex Sentry worth a slot.

At $0.21, Annex Sentry is bulk — pick up as many copies as you need without thinking about cost. Bulk commons and uncommons with narrow homes tend to stay in this range indefinitely, so there's no urgency and no risk buying in.
