Anax, Hardened in the Forge

Legendary Enchantment Creature — Demigod

Anax's power is equal to your devotion to red. (Each {R} in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to red.)
Whenever Anax or another nontoken creature you control dies, create a 1/1 red Satyr creature token with "This token can't block." If the creature had power 4 or greater, create two of those tokens instead.

Anax, Hardened in the Forge card art
Anax, Hardened in the Forge floods the board with Satyr tokens on command, turning any red creature dying into a replacement body — and that replacement body replaces itself if it dies too. The cost is that the engine lives entirely on the stack and in the graveyard trigger, so a well-timed Grafdigger's Cage shuts it down; in decks already leaning on recursive threats like Squee, the Immortal or sacrifice payoffs like Clive, Ifrit's Dominant, that weakness barely registers.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01

Clive, Ifrit's Dominant

23.6% of decks · synergy 0.22

Clive, Ifrit's Dominant wants a constant stream of expendable creatures to sacrifice for value, and Anax, Hardened in the Forge guarantees that every red creature you feed to the engine spawns at least one Satyr to feed the next activation.

02
Purphoros, God of the Forge

Purphoros, God of the Forge

20.7% of decks · synergy 0.19

Every Satyr token Anax, Hardened in the Forge generates pings each opponent for two with Purphoros, God of the Forge on the battlefield, turning a mass board wipe into a lethal damage burst rather than a setback.

03
Juri, Master of the Revue

Juri, Master of the Revue

13.0% of decks · synergy 0.12

Juri, Master of the Revue grows on each sacrifice and deals damage equal to his power when he dies — Anax, Hardened in the Forge keeps the sacrifice fodder flowing so Juri can snowball faster and threaten a one-shot kill with less setup.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where Anax, Hardened in the Forge earns its keep — 100-card decks built around red sacrifice or token flood lean on it as a resilience layer that survives most board wipes and never really goes away. In Modern and Pioneer, red aggro and sacrifice shells can technically run it, but the three-mana cost and lack of immediate board impact make it a fringe consideration next to faster, more linear threats. Legacy and Vintage have access to the same card but play at a speed where a 3/2 with a death trigger is rarely relevant. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home for the same reason Commander is — the format rewards engines, and Anax, Hardened in the Forge is a compact one.

Price Context

Current price

$0.25 bulk tier

At $0.25, Anax, Hardened in the Forge is firmly bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card that sees consistent Commander play across thousands of decks. Bulk rares with real constructed and Commander demand tend to stay in this range or drift slightly higher with reprints, so treat it as a cheap pickup rather than a price-sensitive decision.
