Zof Shade is a black creature that pumps itself for each black mana you sink into it — the ceiling is high if your mana base cooperates, but a 2/1 body for three with no built-in protection means it dies to any stiff breeze before you ever activate it. Shade effects scale with devotion-heavy black decks and do very little everywhere else.

Zof Shade is a Pauper-legal shade, and that's the format where shade effects have historically seen the most play — black-devotion and mono-black aggro shells can abuse it when paired with enough swamps. In Commander, it's a win-more card: you need a board state where you're already winning and have excess mana to dump into a single creature, which is rarely the bottleneck you want to solve. Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer all have redundant, more efficient threats that don't demand a mana sink to become relevant, so Zof Shade doesn't crack those formats competitively.
