The cost is that none of this happens until you have the engine running — without a dedicated lifegain shell, it's a vanilla 2/2 for three mana.

Zhalfirin Crusader is a Commander card through and through — the slower, multiplayer environment gives it the time it needs to generate multiple triggers, and white's deep lifegain toolkit makes it easy to abuse. In Legacy and Vintage, it's technically legal but competes with a card pool that punishes three-mana creatures that don't immediately win the game, so it never sees play there. Oathbreaker is the one other format where it could reasonably appear, slotted under a white lifegain planeswalker as a token generator. If you're not in Commander, don't bother.
