Zephid is a 3/4 flying shroud creature for five mana that becomes cheaper the more cards you hold — a reasonable body that protects itself but can't be targeted by your own effects either. The shroud clause is the ceiling and the floor: it keeps Zephid alive through spot removal but makes it a poor candidate for any aura, equipment, or pump spell you'd want to stack on it.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Zephid occupies an awkward middle ground — the cost-reduction clause rarely matters past the early game when hands are thin, and a vanilla-adjacent 3/4 flyer with shroud doesn't close games or generate value. Legacy and Vintage have access to Zephid but have no reason to run it; both formats demand far more from a five-mana slot, and the hand-size discount doesn't compensate for competing with format staples. Zephid is legal in Oathbreaker as well, where the faster clock makes a shroud flyer even less relevant.

Price Context
Current price
$0.93 bulk tier
At $0.93, Zephid sits at the top edge of bulk — a reflection of age and scarcity rather than demand. There's no meaningful play pressure driving that price up, so don't expect it to appreciate.
