Zealous Conscripts card art
Zealous Conscripts steals any permanent the moment it enters — a creature, a planeswalker, a land, anything — and that flexibility at five mana is exactly what makes it worth the slot. The real reason it shows up across thousands of Commander lists is the Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker combo: copy Zealous Conscripts, have the copy untap Kiki-Jiki, repeat for infinite hasty attackers; The Jolly Balloon Man decks run both pieces as a matter of course.

Brion Stoutarm

Brion Stoutarm

47.4% of decks · synergy 0.43

Brion Stoutarm wants large creatures to fling, and Zealous Conscripts hands him an opponent's best threat then lets Brion Stoutarm throw it at its own controller for lethal damage.

Delina, Wild Mage

Delina, Wild Mage

41.4% of decks · synergy 0.37

Delina, Wild Mage copies creatures on successful attacks, so each Zealous Conscripts token she makes steals another permanent — the more copies Delina, Wild Mage generates, the more board presence she strips away.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Zealous Conscripts does its best work: a single copy closes games through the Kiki-Jiki combo, and the enters-the-battlefield trigger is never dead even without the combo because every table has something worth stealing. In Legacy and Vintage, five mana is too slow for a format where games are decided on turns one through three, and Zealous Conscripts sees essentially no competitive play there. Modern has enough efficient threats that a five-mana conditional steal rarely makes the cut outside of fringe creature toolbox shells. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where Zealous Conscripts earns a genuine look, particularly in red spell-slinger builds that can recur or copy the enters-the-battlefield effect.

Price Context

Current price

$0.34 bulk tier

At $0.34, Zealous Conscripts is firmly bulk despite being one of the more impactful combo pieces in Commander — that price reflects wide availability across multiple printings rather than any lack of demand. It's a safe pickup at this price; the floor is essentially the floor.
