Yuan-Ti Fang-Blade enters the battlefield and immediately poisons an opponent, then reloads that poison counter every time it ventures into a dungeon — that's a repeatable clock stapled to a three-mana 2/3. Sefris of the Hidden Ways turns this from a cute draft card into a genuine engine piece, and it earns its roster spot in any deck that ventures more than twice per game.

Commanders with the highest synergy

Sefris of the Hidden Ways
Sefris of the Hidden Ways ventures on every creature entering from the graveyard, which means Yuan-Ti Fang-Blade can stack poison counters repeatedly through a single reanimation loop — the dungeon completion also triggers Sefris's own recursion, making the two cards a self-reinforcing engine.

Acererak the Archlich
Acererak the Archlich bounces himself until Dungeon of the Mad Mage is complete, and each re-cast ventures Yuan-Ti Fang-Blade again — two poison counters deep before combat even starts, and Acererak's repeated dungeon runs make that ceiling easy to hit.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Yuan-Ti Fang-Blade is a Commander card first and almost exclusively — the venture mechanic only fires reliably when a dedicated dungeon engine is supplying repeated triggers, and those engines live in 100-card singleton, not 60-card formats. In pauper it's legal but the dungeon infrastructure doesn't exist to support it, so the 2/3 body at three mana doesn't clear any competitive bar. Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage have zero interest in a creature that asks this much setup for poison counter accumulation at this speed. Commander is the one format where Yuan-Ti Fang-Blade can do exactly what it promises, and even there it belongs in a narrow slice of venture-focused builds rather than as a generalist poison plan.

Price Context
Current price
$0.21 bulk tier
At $0.21, Yuan-Ti Fang-Blade is firmly bulk — pick it up in a common box or throw it in any order that needs a few cents of filler. Bulk rares with narrow synergy don't tend to spike, so there's no urgency and no upside to stocking copies beyond what a single deck needs.
