Word of Undoing returns a creature to its owner's hand and strips every Aura and Equipment attached to it — a two-for-one tempo play at instant speed for a single blue mana. The catch is that your opponent gets their creature back, so it wins the exchange on cards but not on board presence.

In Commander, Word of Undoing is a fringe inclusion — bounce is plentiful and cheaper alternatives like Unsummon exist, but the built-in equipment and aura stripping gives it a niche edge in metas where Swords or Umbras are common threats. In Pauper, where the card is legal and the card pool is shallow, Word of Undoing sees occasional play as a tempo tool that can break up a Bogle or equipment package without requiring extra card investment. Legacy and Vintage have access to Swords to Plowshares, Prismatic Ending, and far more efficient interaction, so Word of Undoing doesn't compete at those levels. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander in terms of role — situationally useful, rarely a first pick.
