Wish lets you pull any non-land card from outside the game at instant speed for two mana — that flexibility is the whole appeal. At its floor it's a silver-bullet tutor; at its ceiling it's a mid-combat answer that opponents never see coming.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Wish is legal but constrained — the rules permit retrieving cards from a sideboard, and most Commander players don't run one, which makes Wish a dead card in most pods unless your playgroup explicitly opts into the sideboard variant. In Legacy and Vintage, where sideboards are standard, Wish earns real play as a one-of tutor that reaches bullets game-one. Modern and Pioneer legality is technically on the books, but the format doesn't reward a two-mana sorcery-speed tutor when faster options exist. Oathbreaker is the Commander-adjacent format most likely to support Wish with a sideboard present, making it marginally more playable there.

Price Context
Current price
$1.80 cheap tier
At $1.80, Wish sits in impulse-buy territory — easy to pick up without second-guessing. The price reflects niche demand: it's genuinely powerful when sideboards are in play, but that condition limits its audience enough to keep the ceiling low.
