Wirewood Hivemaster turns every non-token Elf you play into a free 1/1 Insect, meaning a single Elf-heavy turn can flood the board with blockers or sacrifice fodder before you even untap. Two mana for a persistent token engine is the right price — run it in any Elf deck that wants bodies beyond the Elves themselves.

Wirewood Hivemaster is a Commander card through and through — 100-card singleton Elf builds cast enough Elves per game to generate a meaningful swarm of Insects, and the two-mana cost fits comfortably on curve. In Legacy, where it's technically legal, dedicated Elf combo decks run too lean and fast to want a do-nothing-on-entry enchantment creature that generates 1/1s at sorcery speed. Vintage offers no realistic home. Wirewood Hivemaster is essentially a Commander-only inclusion, and even there it earns its slot only in decks that deploy six-plus Elves over a game — tribal aggro and go-wide stompy, not Elf combo that kills before tokens matter.

$0.29 bulk tier
At $0.29, Wirewood Hivemaster is deep bulk — pick it up without thinking about cost. Bulk token-makers in niche tribal slots rarely spike, so don't expect movement; this is a card you grab for a quarter and forget about in the best way.
