Willow Geist enters as a 1/1 for one mana and grows every time a permanent leaves an opponent's graveyard — in the right shell, it becomes a legitimate threat by turn three. The ceiling is absurd alongside Mortuary, which loops permanents through the graveyard and can make Willow Geist functionally unkillable as a combat threat; Kirri, Talented Sprout decks found this out fast, with over half of them running it.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Kirri, Talented Sprout
Kirri, Talented Sprout mills constantly and cares about +1/+1 counters, making Willow Geist a natural fit that grows every time a permanent cycles out of an opponent's yard and doubles as a counter-synergy piece for the rest of the deck.

Grolnok, the Omnivore
Grolnok, the Omnivore builds its whole engine around milling — yours and opponents' — so Willow Geist reliably accumulates counters as the graveyard churns, turning a one-mana creature into a multi-turn clock.

Fangorn, Tree Shepherd
Fangorn, Tree Shepherd runs enough self-mill and graveyard recursion that Willow Geist picks up counters as a side effect of the deck doing what it already wants to do, giving the deck a low-investment attacker that scales with the game.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Willow Geist is a sleeper threat — one mana is almost free, and multiplayer graveyard activity means it rarely stays small for long. In Modern and Legacy, it occupies a narrow niche: graveyard-centric decks that want a cheap threat which scales, though neither format lacks for options at that slot. Pioneer is its weakest constructed home — the graveyard payoff decks there tend to want more immediate impact from a one-drop. Willow Geist is legal in Oathbreaker and functions similarly to its Commander role there, growing off whatever graveyard churn the deck generates.

$0.46 bulk tier
At $0.46, Willow Geist is bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card with genuine combo and synergy upside. Bulk mythics and rares with proven engines tend to absorb price pressure slowly, so this is a reasonable pickup at essentially no cost.
