At instant speed for {1}{G}, it's a cheap way to blank a targeted removal spell while leaving a permanent upgrade behind.

In Commander, the indestructible counter has real staying power: it survives board wipes, stacks with other counters, and scales well on commanders you've invested mana into reanimating or recasting.
