Wild Shape turns any creature you control into a hexproof 2/2 or 4/4 until end of turn, protecting it from targeted removal at instant speed while keeping it on board. At one mana with flashback for two, it pulls double duty — one copy does the work twice.

In Commander, Wild Shape earns its slot as a cheap, reusable protection spell that also doubles as a combat trick — the hexproof shield stops targeted exile, bounce, and kill spells that would otherwise dismantle a key piece. The flashback clause means a single copy of Wild Shape can protect two different creatures across two different threat windows, which overperforms its mana investment. In Legacy and Vintage it rarely sees play, where interaction is faster and creature-based strategies have more efficient protection options. Modern and Pioneer players in Auras or Bogles-adjacent shells might consider it, but Slip Out the Back and Tyvar's Stand compete in the same space with more upside.

$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Wild Shape is deep bulk — pick it up without a second thought if the effect fits your deck. Bulk commons with flashback tend to stay cheap indefinitely, so there's no urgency to buying multiples as a hedge.
