Whirlwind Adept card art
Whirlwind Adept gives a creature hexproof and double strike for four mana at instant speed — that combination wins combats and blanks targeted removal on the spot. The cost is steep enough that it rarely earns a main-deck slot, but as a combat trick it overperforms when the target is already threatening lethal.

In Commander, Whirlwind Adept is a fringe include in Voltron strategies where doubling a commander's damage output — and making it untouchable in response to removal — can end games on the spot; the four-mana cost hurts, but the instant speed justifies it in dedicated builds. In Pauper, common-legal double strike enablers are scarce enough that Whirlwind Adept sees occasional play in aggressive tempo shells. Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer have cleaner, cheaper options at every point on this curve, so it doesn't compete there. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander logic at a smaller table scale — same Voltron niche, same ceiling.

$0.04 bulk tier

At $0.04, Whirlwind Adept is pure bulk — you're picking it out of a commons bin, not tracking a price. Bulk commons with narrow applications don't appreciate, so treat it as a free inclusion if the effect fits rather than anything worth stocking up on.
