Whipflare hits every nonartifact creature with -2/-2 for two mana — that's a sweeper that routinely clears token boards and early utility creatures without touching your artifact-based gameplan. Bulk price, real effect: it belongs in any red deck running a meaningful artifact count.
Format Analysis

In Commander, Whipflare earns its slot in artifact-heavy decks — Breya, Etherium Shaper, Daretti, Scrap Savant, and similar commanders often fill their boards with Thopters, Servos, and Myr that laugh at the -2/-2 while opponents' mana dorks and utility creatures die. In Legacy and Vintage, it competes with Pyroclasm for the same slot and mostly loses — the nonartifact clause is irrelevant in most fair-game contexts, and those formats demand more precision than a symmetrical small-creature sweep offers. Modern has enough cheap removal that Whipflare rarely makes the cut outside fringe Affinity-style shells. Oathbreaker mirrors its Commander role: artifact commanders make the restriction into an asymmetric advantage.

Price Context
Current price
$0.29 bulk tier
At $0.29, Whipflare is firmly bulk — easy to pick up as a throw-in or from a dollar box. The price reflects its narrow-but-real niche: it won't spike, but it doesn't need to; you're buying function, not scarcity.
