Weathered Bodyguards redirects all combat damage that would hit your other creatures to itself as long as it has the highest toughness among your creatures — a passive, no-tap protection effect that can lock down an entire board state. The catch is a 5-mana 1/6 body, which means you're paying a premium for the effect and need to keep its toughness on top, but in the right shell that condition is trivially maintained.

In Commander, Weathered Bodyguards earns its slot in toughness-matters builds — Doran, the Siege Tower, Arcades, the Strategist, and similar commanders — where its redirect condition is easy to maintain and the 6-toughness body doubles as an offensive piece or sacrifice target. Outside of those synergy shells, five mana for a 1/6 with a fragile protection clause isn't competitive enough for 100-card singleton, since opponents can simply attack with a creature that has 7 or more toughness to break the redirect. In Legacy and Vintage, Weathered Bodyguards has no realistic application — those formats end games too quickly for a 5-mana do-nothing creature to matter. Modern is technically legal but the card sees no play there for the same reason.
