Wandering Graybeard enters with a burst of life equal to your devotion to white, then replaces itself with a card draw — meaningful sustain and card advantage stapled to a five-mana body. The cost is steep enough that it belongs in dedicated white-devotion shells, not generic goodstuff piles.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Wandering Graybeard does its best work, specifically in mono-white or heavy-white devotion builds that can reliably turn the life gain into a large number. In Legacy and Vintage it is a non-starter — five mana for a 4/4 that draws a card is nowhere near the rate those formats demand. Modern is technically legal but the same problem applies: the payoff requires a board full of white permanents that faster decks will have already answered. Oathbreaker shares Commander's rules space closely enough that the same devotion shells apply, though the tighter card pool shrinks the supporting cast.

Price Context
Current price
$0.18 bulk tier
At $0.18, Wandering Graybeard is firmly bulk, and that price is likely to hold — devotion to white is a narrow enough theme that demand stays modest. Pick up copies freely; there is no reason to hesitate at this tier.
