Wand of Ith forces an opponent to discard a card each turn for the low price of tapping it and paying one mana — repeated hand disruption stapled to an artifact that any color can run. The ongoing cost is real, but the effect compounds: an opponent losing a card every turn is an opponent who runs out of answers.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Wand of Ith is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and Commander is where it actually sees play. In Legacy and Vintage, one mana plus a tap to make an opponent discard one card is simply too slow and too targetable against formats defined by turn-one and turn-two kills — there are cheaper, faster discard spells that don't require an artifact to survive. Commander is the right home: the game goes long, multiple opponents mean multiple targets, and the cumulative pressure of hitting someone every turn adds up in a format where incremental card advantage matters. In Oathbreaker, the faster pace cuts into its value, but discard-themed Oathbreakers can still extract real mileage from it.

Price Context
Current price
$1.10 cheap tier
At $1.10, Wand of Ith sits in budget territory — cheap enough to include without deliberation in any discard-themed build. It's an older card with a narrow audience, so the price is stable; don't expect it to spike, but don't expect it to get cheaper either.
