Wall of Swords blocks fliers for as long as you need it to — 3/5 flying with defender stops most aerial threats cold. The problem is five mana for a card that does nothing but sit there is a steep ask in any competitive context.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Wall of Swords is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but seeing genuine play in essentially none of them. In Commander, five mana for a static blocker with no enters-the-battlefield effect and no way to pressure opponents is close to unplayable — the format's threats outpace what a vanilla defender can answer. Legacy and Vintage move too fast for a five-drop that draws no cards, generates no mana, and wins no games. Modern and Pioneer have access to far more efficient defensive tools that also contribute to a win condition. Wall of Swords is legal on paper across these formats; it just doesn't have a home in any of them.

Price Context
Current price
$0.21 bulk tier
At $0.21, Wall of Swords sits firmly in bulk territory, and nothing about its mechanics is likely to change that. Demand is too low and supply too abundant for this price to move in either direction.
