Wakedancer enters and immediately puts a 2/2 Zombie token on the board — no hoops, no waiting — as long as you paid life this turn, which any fetch land, Phyrexian mana spell, or shock land trigger satisfies trivially in black. Three mana for a 2/2 plus a 2/2 is a clean two-for-one, and in Zombie tribal that body count compounds fast.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Wakedancer earns its slot — Zombie tribal lists under Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver or Gisa and Geralf want every body they can get, and the life-loss condition is a non-issue in a format full of fetch lands, Phyrexian mana, and incidental drain effects. In Pauper, Wakedancer is a legitimate role-player in black aggro and reanimator shells where paying life on turn three is almost automatic. Legacy and Vintage have it, but three-mana creatures that don't immediately threaten the game state don't make those cuts. Modern has faster and more resilient token producers, so Wakedancer sits on the outside looking in there too.

Price Context
Current price
$0.07 bulk tier
At $0.07, Wakedancer is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and shipping, not the card itself. That price is stable because supply is abundant and demand is narrow, so there's no reason to hesitate picking up copies for any Zombie build that needs the slot.
