Vicious Offering kills a creature for one black mana — or two black and a sacrifice — and hits indestructible targets when you pay the kicker. It's narrow removal that occasionally punches above its weight, but you're running it because the base rate is cheap enough and the ceiling relevant enough in sacrifice-heavy shells.

In Commander, Vicious Offering earns its slot in sacrifice decks where the kicker cost is nearly free — if you're already feeding creatures to an altar, -5/-5 at instant speed cleans up whatever your opponents think is safe behind indestructibility. Outside of that archetype, a one-mana removal spell with a conditional upgrade is a fine budget option but faces stiff competition from unconditional answers. In Pauper, where removal quality at common is a real constraint, Vicious Offering is a competitive inclusion — the kicker mode is harder to enable but the base spell is efficient. In Legacy and Vintage it doesn't see play; the bar for black removal in those formats is too high. Modern and Pioneer similarly have better options at every price point.
