Vexing Puzzlebox card art
Vexing Puzzlebox enters the battlefield and immediately starts generating dice rolls every time an opponent casts a spell, turning their plays into a drip-feed of mana and counters. Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor doubles every roll above 10, which means this artifact goes from slow-burn value to a genuine threat multiplier as the game progresses.

Wyll, Blade of FrontiersSword Coast Sailor

Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor

88.0% of decks · synergy 0.87

Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor is the native home for Vexing Puzzlebox — the commander's triggered ability fires on every die roll above 10, and the Puzzlebox generates a roll for each spell opponents cast, so a busy table means consistent bonus triggers without spending a single mana per roll.

02
Mr. House, President and CEO

Mr. House, President and CEO

86.2% of decks · synergy 0.81

Mr. House, President and CEO rewards every dice roll with Treasure production and servo tokens, so Vexing Puzzlebox converts opponents' spell-casting into a resource engine that fuels both the board and the mana base simultaneously.

03
Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients

Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients

46.2% of decks · synergy 0.45

Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients triggers whenever it takes damage, and Vexing Puzzlebox can channel that damage through its activated ability to generate a cascade of Dragon Spirit tokens when paired with the right rolls.

The Most Dangerous Gamer

The Most Dangerous Gamer

38.1% of decks · synergy 0.38

The Most Dangerous Gamer cares about rolling high and repeatedly, and Vexing Puzzlebox provides a passive roll source that doesn't require attacking or spending additional resources beyond the initial three-mana investment.

Delina, Wild Mage needs repeated high rolls to chain her attack trigger, and Vexing Puzzlebox supplies extra dice-rolling opportunities that increase the odds of hitting the 15+ threshold during combat steps.

Vexing Puzzlebox is a Commander card through and through — its power scales with the number of opponents casting spells, and a four-player table generates far more rolls per game than any 1v1 situation would. In Legacy and Vintage, where it's technically legal, the three-mana investment for a slow incremental effect is nowhere near competitive enough to see play. Commander is where the math works: opponents' spell-heavy turns translate directly into charge counters and mana, and in the right dice-rolling deck the card pulls serious weight over a 10-turn game.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Pixie Guide and Barbarian Class both cost well under $1 and add extra dice to any roll, which lets you chase high numbers more consistently without Vexing Puzzlebox's passive generation. The trade-off is that those cards are purely roll-modifiers rather than roll-generators — they make existing rolls better but don't create new ones from opponents' actions.

Price Context

Current price

$10.58 mid tier

At $10.58, Vexing Puzzlebox sits firmly in the mid tier, which is steep for a support piece that doesn't win games on its own. The price holds in dedicated dice-rolling builds where it's a four-of effect in a one-copy format, but outside Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor or Mr. House, President and CEO, it's hard to justify over cheaper alternatives.
