Vesperlark card art
Vesperlark is a recursive value engine that returns a creature with power 1 or less from your graveyard every time it leaves the battlefield — including when it dies. The catch is the fragile body and the narrow reanimation ceiling, but Activated Sleeper and similar low-power combo pieces make that ceiling irrelevant the moment you build around it.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is where Vesperlark earns its keep — graveyard recursion loops, sacrifice synergies, and combo infrastructure are all abundant, and Vesperlark slots cleanly into any white shell that wants a repeatable reanimation trigger at two mana. In Legacy and Vintage it sees niche play in specific combo lines but can't compete for raw efficiency against the format's faster engines. Modern is theoretically legal ground but the power bar is high enough that Vesperlark only shows up in dedicated sacrifice or recursion builds rather than as a mainstay. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's environment closely enough that the same assessments apply.
