Verdant Force card art
Verdant Force puts a 1/1 Saproling onto the battlefield at the beginning of every upkeep — yours and each opponent's — which means at a four-player table you're generating three tokens per round on top of your own. Eight mana is a real ask, but the board presence it accumulates is immediate and recursive enough that token-payoff commanders, especially Slimefoot, the Stowaway, treat it as a engine piece rather than a top-end threat.

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

62.1% of decks · synergy 0.60

Slimefoot, the Stowaway converts every Saproling death into a drain trigger, so the steady token stream from Verdant Force isn't just board presence — it's a damage engine that fires every upkeep around the table.

02
Shroofus Sproutsire

Shroofus Sproutsire

41.9% of decks · synergy 0.39

Shroofus Sproutsire cares about tokens and fungi flooding the board, and Verdant Force supplies a guaranteed Saproling every upkeep to keep the count climbing without spending additional resources.

03
Slimefoot and Squee

Slimefoot and Squee

33.5% of decks · synergy 0.32

Slimefoot and Squee wants a deep pool of sacrificeable creatures to fuel its recursion loop, and the persistent token generation from Verdant Force keeps the supply topped off even after repeated sacrifice outlets drain the board.

04
Emmara, Soul of the Accord

Emmara, Soul of the Accord

18.6% of decks · synergy 0.18

Emmara, Soul of the Accord rewards going wide with tapped creatures, and Verdant Force provides a background drip of tokens that can be tapped into attacks or convoke spells to trigger Emmara's own token production.

05
Thromok the Insatiable

Thromok the Insatiable

15.1% of decks · synergy 0.15

Thromok the Insatiable scales directly with the number of creatures devoured, and Verdant Force guarantees a steady pile of Saprolings to feed into it for a reliably enormous power stat.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict

Commander is the obvious home for Verdant Force — the multiplayer upkeep trigger multiplies its output by the number of opponents, and the format's slower clock makes eight mana achievable through ramp. In Legacy and Vintage, eight mana is functionally unplayable; anything that costs that much needs to win the game on the spot, and a token-per-upkeep doesn't clear that bar. Modern and Pioneer are theoretically legal but run into the same problem: the format speed means Verdant Force will almost never resolve through a fair game. Stick to Commander, where the card does exactly what it promises.

Price Context

Current price

$0.41 bulk tier

At $0.41, Verdant Force is bulk — you're not paying a premium for its Commander role despite showing up in over six thousand Slimefoot, the Stowaway decks. That price is stable; it's a casual staple with consistent demand but no scarcity driving it higher.
