Verazol, the Split Current
Legendary Creature — Serpent
Verazol enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each mana spent to cast it.
Whenever you cast a kicked spell, you may remove two +1/+1 counters from Verazol. If you do, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy. (A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.)

Verazol, the Split Current enters with X +1/+1 counters and copies every kicked spell you cast for free — the payoff is immediate and snowballing. The cost is real: you're building around a mechanic with limited support, and Verazol does nothing if you're not leaning hard into kicker.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Verazol, the Split Current belongs — the 100-card singleton format gives you room to stack enough kicker spells to make the copy trigger feel oppressive, and the higher life totals let you survive long enough to set up. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern or Legacy, the kicker synergy package is too narrow and too slow to compete; Verazol would be a fringe build-around at best and a liability at worst. Pioneer is legal but the same problem applies — there's no kicker density to justify the slot. Oathbreaker is an interesting home if you pair Verazol as the planeswalker's signature spell, though that's a niche edge case.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Verazol, the Split Current is deep bulk — you're paying essentially nothing for a build-around commander with a focused but functional game plan. Bulk rares with narrow synergy requirements tend to stay cheap, so don't expect the price to move unless a future set prints a wave of pushed kicker spells.
