Vengeful Ancestor card art
Vengeful Ancestor enters, steals an opponent's creature, and forces it to attack someone else — permanent political leverage stapled to a 3/4 flying body. The four-mana cost is fair for that effect, and in Firkraag, Cunning Instigator shells where goading is the entire game plan, this card is doing exactly what the deck needs.

01
Firkraag, Cunning Instigator

Firkraag, Cunning Instigator

93.3% of decks · synergy 0.91

Firkraag, Cunning Instigator goads as its core mechanic, and Vengeful Ancestor extends that goad package while also ripping a blocker away from the opponent whose creature you most need attacking into someone else — the flying body is just a bonus.

03
Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant

Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant

76.6% of decks · synergy 0.74

Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant goads on combat damage and draws cards when goaded creatures attack, so Vengeful Ancestor adds another body to the pool of creatures that must swing into opponents and keep the card advantage flowing.

04
Baeloth Barrityl, EntertainerNoble Heritage

Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer // Noble Heritage

69.4% of decks · synergy 0.66

Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer goads every creature that attacks its controller, and Vengeful Ancestor feeds that loop by seizing an opponent's creature and pointing it directly into the crossfire Baeloth wants to create.

05
The Rani

The Rani

65.1% of decks · synergy 0.65

The Rani proliferates when opponents' creatures deal combat damage to other opponents, and Vengeful Ancestor's stolen attacker is a reliable source of exactly that — you're manufacturing the trigger The Rani needs without spending extra cards.

Vengeful Ancestor is a Commander card through and through — the multiplayer politics of goading and theft are nearly meaningless in one-on-one formats, so its Legacy and Vintage legality is a technicality that goes nowhere in practice. In Commander, it occupies a specific and well-defined role in goad and combat-manipulation strategies, where it earns its slot in the 99 by generating immediate board presence, removing a threat, and redirecting aggression all at once. Outside that archetype, it's too slow and too conditional for competitive singleton play. Oathbreaker allows it but the same caveat applies — only run Vengeful Ancestor if your spellbook is built around forcing attacks.

Price Context

Current price

$0.88 bulk tier

At $0.88, Vengeful Ancestor sits squarely in bulk territory, which makes it an easy inclusion for any goad deck on any budget. That price is unlikely to move much — it's a niche role-player with no cross-format demand, so buy it for the effect, not for the shelf.
