Vanishment puts a creature on top of its owner's library — effectively removing it from the battlefield for at least a turn, and longer if that player has no draw acceleration. Five mana at instant speed is a real cost, and it doesn't answer enchantments, artifacts, or commanders that go back to the command zone instead.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Vanishment competes in a crowded field of blue bounce and exile effects, and five mana is hard to justify when Rapid Hybridization and Reality Shift exist at one. It finds its clearest niche in decks that care about what's on top of opponents' libraries — Chaos or extra-turns shells that can exploit the tempo — but even then it's rarely the best tool. In Legacy and Vintage, Vanishment is simply too slow; those formats end before a five-mana sorcery-speed-equivalent removal spell matters. Oathbreaker follows the same Commander logic at a smaller scale, where the tighter mana constraints make the cost even steeper.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Vanishment is deep bulk — the price reflects its limited competitive demand across every format it's legal in. Don't expect movement; there's no breakout shell waiting to spike a five-mana creature-topper.
